Someone riding thru the non-event of LAST year’s hurricane… Don’t try it this year folks! But if you do – please take a GoPro with you.
So in addition to what we said last year, we learned a couple of things… If you have to park your motorcycle outdoors during the hurricane, or any other fall-winter storm, here are some tips to keep it safe.
1. Park near a wall. If you live in a building with a courtyard, see if the super will let you roll it in there. Better yet, just do it, and then tell him afterward.
2. Cover the bike (and tie loose parts of the cover down). During wind storms people often recommend not-covering the bike because the cover can act like a sail and knock the bike over… But during a really fierce storm water is likely to get in places that are not waterproof, going underneath body parts, causing all sorts of trouble down the line. So cover the bike and tie down the covers using twine or packing tape so that your bike looks like a poorly wrapped Christmas present. The goal is to keep water out of the undersides.
3. Chain the wheel up. Preferably in such a way that it will prevent the bike from being knocked over.
4. If you parked on the sidewalk parallel to the curb against a lamppost, odds are the parking ticket people won’t be around during the hurricane.
5. To be extra safe, tie down parts of your bike (e.g., to a lamppost if you’re parked next to one, or to a gate of your house or apartment). Getting knocked over will NOT be the end of the world, but it can be costly to repair, and might be avoidable – even during a hurricane.
6. Be wary of what is overhead. Trees will fall, signs get knocked down and fly around. Try to find a spot that’s out of harm’s way.
The only other things I can think of is to run to the supermarket while you can, and get a six pack of something cold and some chips, and cue up last night’s episode of the Walking Dead.
Any other tips? Share the wealth. Cheers!
